New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady disputed an ESPN report that said he was “liberated” when the team traded Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers in October.

ESPN’s Seth Wickersham reported Brady seemed “especially excited” the day after the trade. The Patriots’ have denied various elements of the article, which alleged there was growing tension among Brady, coach Bill Belichick and owner Robert Kraft.

“I think that’s just such a poor characterization of anything,” Brady said in his weekly radio appearance on sports radio WEEI’s Kirk and Callahan Show. “In 18 years, I’ve never celebrated when someone has been traded, been cut.”

Brady said he wished Garoppolo the best when he was traded.

I think I’m very empathetic toward other people’s experiences,” Brady said. “I know those situations aren’t easy. I’ve never been traded or released, but I can imagine how that might feel. I would never, ever feel that way about when Jimmy got traded, when Jacoby [Brissett] got traded.”
