NEW YORK (AP) - A New York man accused of striking a state trooper with his car before he was shot by the officer has been charged with attempted murder.

The Press & Sun-Bulletin reports James Giacalone is awaiting extradition to New York after spending a week in a hospital in Pennsylvania. State police have said troopers were trying to arrest him on a warrant Jan. 2. Authorities say he struck the trooper and was shot as he drove away. He was later apprehended when he crashed into a pole.

None of the injuries were life-threatening. It isn’t clear if Giacalone has a lawyer who can speak about the charges against him, or when he will return to New York.

The Broome County district attorney said the officer was justified in shooting the suspect.
