SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon and four Democratic lawmakers are heading to Mexico for four days of meetings to solidify California’s relationship with its southern neighbor.
The delegation will leave Wednesday and return Saturday. Rendon says the trip will send a message that California wants to work with Mexico despite actions by the federal government. President Donald Trump told Congress members on Tuesday any agreement to protect young immigrants must include construction of his promised border wall.
Joining Rendon are Democratic Assembly members Todd Gloria of San Diego, Kevin McCarty of Sacramento, Jose Medina of Riverside and Eloise Gomez Reyes of San Bernardino. The group will meet with government officials, lawmakers, business leaders and the U.S. ambassador to Mexico.
