RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a driver was assaulted by a group of motorcyclists who apparently followed him off the freeway into downtown Riverside.

The Press-Enterprise reports Riverside Police Officer Ryan Railsback says the victim, who was not identified by name, was treated for injuries at the scene of the assault Sunday on Mission Inn Avenue near the 91 Freeway.

It is not clear what may have happened on the freeway prior to the assault.

Railsback says the California Highway Patrol alerted police that “they were getting reports of large numbers of motorcyclists on the freeway headed toward Riverside.”

The number was estimated at about 200 motorcyclists.

Railsback says the motorcyclists were gone by the time authorities arrived and found the victim on the ground with his face bleeding.
