White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Friday that author Michael Wolff made up quotes for his controversial book about President Trump and the administration.

“This is a guy who made up a lot of stories to try to sell books, and I think more and more people are starting to see that his facts just simply don’t add up,” Mrs. Sanders said on Fox News.

The book “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House” has generated a lot of controversy for depicting Mr. Trump as childlike, and his administration as chaotic and dysfunctional. The authenticity of the quotes and conclusions drawn have been questioned, and some of those Mr. Wolff spoke to said he violated journalistic ethics.

“Not only did they say it was off the record, but a number of them have said that the things that are attributed to them they simply just didn’t say,” Mrs. Sanders said of those sources Mr. Wolff spoke with.

She acknowledged that the president did speak with Mr. Wolff, but it was not about the book.

“We said they spoke once by the phone for a few minutes, but it wasn’t about the book. They had a very short conversation, but he never interviewed the president about the book,” Mrs. Sanders said.

She said Mr. Wolff has a “long history” of “not being very credible” on sourcing.
