Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin was named Wednesday as one of the NHL’s four captains for the 2018 All-Star Game in Tampa — receiving the most fan votes in the Metropolitan Division.
Ovechkin, 32, has had a stellar season, leading the league in goals with 26. He is again on pace to score at least 50 goals, which he hasn’t done since the 2015-16 season.
This is Ovechkin’s ninth All-Star selection. The NHL’s All-Star game is a four-team, three-on-three tournament.
“[Ovechkin] doesn’t play a quiet game,” Capitals coach Barry Trotz said. “Obviously he has lots of skill, but when he’s hunting and he’s going after you, he’s pounding you. … He plays a heavy game and it’s amazing he’s as durable as he is.”
The NHL’s All-Star Game takes place on Jan. 28. The rest of the rosters will be announced Jan. 10.
In addition to Ovechkin, Nashville’s P.K. Subban, Tampa’s Steven Stamkos and Edmonton’s Connor McDavid were named captains to the game…
