WASHINGTON (AP) - A man has been arrested in the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old girl at a Washington apartment.

The Washington Post reports Metropolitan police announced Tuesday that 18-year-old Dekale Bowman has been charged with second-degree murder while armed in the Jan. 25 shooting of Taiyania Thompson. Thompson was shot in the head at an apartment near Gallaudet University and died Sunday.

An arrest affidavit filed in D.C. Superior Court says Bowman told a witness the shooting was an accident.

Police said they found several bullets, empty bullet cartridges, holsters and suspected drugs inside the apartment.

Police said Thompson and Bowman had been dating for eight months.

It’s unclear whether Thompson has a lawyer.
