PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island community is fighting for the release of a Guatemalan mother who has been detained by immigration authorities.

The Providence Journal reports that supporters joined Unitarian Universalist minister David Helfer Tuesday to protest for the release of 30-year-old Lilian Calderon-Gordillo. The Providence woman was detained in Boston when she was trying to apply for legal status by verifying her marriage.

Calderon-Gordillo’s husband, Luis Gordillo, is a U.S. citizen. Calderon-Gordillo came to the U.S. when she was 3-years-old and has lived in Rhode Island for most of her life.

Supporters are trying to work with legislators and Immigration and Customs Enforcement for Calderon-Gordillo’s release. An online fundraiser has collected $8,000 to offset the family’s legal fees.

An ICE spokesman said Calderon-Gordillo was issued a final order of removal by a judge.
