NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Tuesday it would be up to Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder to change his team’s name.
Appearing on ESPN Radio, Goodell was asked about the Redskins’ name after MLB commissioner Rob Manfred played a role in pressuring the Cleveland Indians to abandon its Chief Wahoo logo. The Indians announced Monday they would stop using the logo in 2019.
Snyder has said he would never change the name.
Goodell’s comments were in a similar to ones he has made in the past, even citing public policy polls in support of the name.
“Dan Snyder has really worked in the Native American community to understand their perspective, and I think it’s really reflected in a Washington Post poll that showed that nine out of 10 Native Americans do not take that as disrespectful,” Goodell said. “I don’t see him changing that perspective.”
