Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Republicans are aiming to not only carry their states, but pick up some Democratic spots.

“Keeping the majority lies in keeping places like Arizona and Nevada and Missouri and North Dakota and Indiana and West Virginia and we hope to be competitive in Florida as well,” the Kentucky Republican said in a Fox News interview that aired Tuesday. “All of those will be battleground states.”

He acknowledged that historically the president’s party has performed poorly in the midterms, but expressed confidence that the Republicans will do better than expected.

Sen. Cory Gardner, who chairs the campaign fundraising wing of the Senate Republicans, echoed Mr. McConnell, saying that he thinks Republicans have a positive message and a leader people still support.

“We look forward to the president and the vice president engaging in these races across the country,” Mr. Gardner, Colorado Republican, said on Fox News.
