A member of the mainstream media punditry on Tuesday seriously suggested that Rep. Devin Nunes, California Republican, has been compromised by the Kremlin and is now a traitor.
Veteran MSNBC political analyst John Heilemann raised the prospect Mr. Nunes, who as chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence drafted a top secret memo outlining FBI abuses in the investigation of possible Trump-Russia collusion, may be working as a double agent.
“Doesn’t his behavior speak of that, though?” he said, adding, “I mean, I’m not the first person who’s raised this. He’s behaving like someone who’s been compromised, and there are people in the intelligence community and others with great expertise in this area who look at him and say, ’That guy’s been compromised.’”
Mr. Heilemann did not name anyone in the intel community who believes Mr. Nunes, California Republican, is a Kremlin agent.
Mr. Nunes has been investigating the use of the Democratic Party-financed dossier, which makes a series of unverified charges against President Trump. The dossier was written during the 2016 election based on Kremlin sources and used by the FBI. Republicans say that if any one is conspiring with Russians to influence an election it is the Democrats.
To this day, Rep. Adam Schiff of California, ranking Democrat on Mr. Nunes’ committee, cites the dossier’s unproven felony charges when questioning witnesses and is a fan of its writer, former British spy Christopher Steele.
