WAYNESBORO, Miss. (AP) - Employees of a southeast Mississippi town remain in limbo as officials argue over rehiring them.
WDAM-TV reports that Waynesboro Mayor Richard Johnson and city aldermen couldn’t agree Tuesday on rehiring 60 employees, even as many workers watched from the audience. Johnson wants to rehire employees one-by-one, while a majority of aldermen want to rehire all employees on a single vote.
In Waynesboro, employees must be rehired within six months of a new mayoral term beginning. The deadline to act was Friday after Johnson took office for a second term. The board had voted to rehire all employees earlier this month, but Johnson vetoed the decision. The board failed to override.
Aldermen say that if Johnson wants to get rid of particular employees, he should ask the board to fire individuals.
