GOP Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said Wednesday that Mitt Romney would work with President Trump if elected to the Senate.
“I think he’s going to work with this administration. We want that seat to be Republican. I think Mitt has every interest in working with this president and continuing to move forward an agenda that helping grow an economy, keep our employment rates low, helping build our military, taking care of our veterans, the list goes on and on,” Mrs. McDaniel, who is also Mr. Romney’s niece, said on Fox Business.
Mr. Romney has reportedly been contemplating a run for Sen. Orrin Hatch’s seat. Mr. Hatch on Tuesday formally announced plans to retire at the end of his term.
Mr. Romney had friction with Mr. Trump during the campaign, even delivering an address in March 2016, urging voters to be more strategic in voting during the primaries to try and deny Mr. Trump the delegates needed to clinch the nomination.
But Mrs. McDaniel said that’s all in the past, adding that Mr. Romney was considered for the secretary of state post.
“I don’t think he’s a Never Trumper,” she said.
Mr. Romney has not announced any formal plans to run for the seat, but he did change his Twitter location from Massachusetts to Utah this week.
