RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a Southern California man died after he fell out of a car and was hit by a large truck on New Year’s Day.

The Press-Enterprise reports the 22-year-old Corona man was in the back seat of a Volkswagen Jetta when he fell onto Interstate 15 south of Corona early Monday morning.

California Highway Patrol says the car was traveling north when Bret McKinney opened the back door on the right side. Authorities say the reasons for why he opened the door are still under investigation.

McKinney was pronounced dead at the scene after authorities say he was hit by a truck with two or three axles.

Authorities say the truck did not stop.
