All signs seem to point to Jon Gruden replacing Jack Del Rio as the coach of the Oakland Raiders, and Gruden confirmed he’s likely to take the job if it’s offered to him.
In an interview on ESPN Radio’s “Golic and Wingo” Wednesday morning, Gruden said he’s already talked to Oakland owner Mark Davis about the position, which Gruden held previously from 1998-2001.
“I’ve had good conversations with Mark and they’re still going through the interview process,” said Gruden, currently the color commentator for “Monday Night Football.” “When he knows, I think we’ll all know … until they’re done I won’t know but I did have a good meeting with Mark, I’ve known him a long time and I got a lot of respect for the Raider football organization.”
When asked if he would accept the job if Davis makes an offer, Gruden replied, “I think there’s a good chance.”
“I’m excited about where I’m at in terms of studying the game and am prepared to come back and coach,” he said.
Gruden, the brother of Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden, has not coached in the NFL since 2008. He owns a career record of 100-85 and won a Super Bowl title in 2003 when at the helm of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
