Alabama Sen.-elect Doug Jones plans to have former Vice President Joseph R. Biden escort him to be sworn into office later Wednesday, AL.com reported.

Typically, a newly sworn in senator would select his colleague, in this case Sen. Richard Shelby, as an escort. Mr. Shelby, Alabama Republican, was reportedly not asked to serve in this case.

Mr. Biden is a family friend of Mr. Jones, a Democrat, and campaigned with him in the state back in October.

Mr. Jones won the Alabama seat against Republican candidate Roy Moore, who was dogged by allegations of sexual misconduct with teenagers when he was in his 30s. He has denied the accusations.
