PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (AP) - An historic Rhode Island home is being restored and divided into condominiums.
The Sarah J. Eddy House has been vacant for five years.
Contractor Timothy Wordell tells the Newport Daily News he plans to restore the home using such things as the original wood floors and fireplace mantles.
Eddy was a famous 19th century American artist and photographer. She also was active in the abolition, and suffragist movements, and helped found the Rhode Island Humane Society.
Wordell says he plans to hang replicas of her work in the foyer of the home, which has been purchased by a limited-liability company that includes Wordell’s father-in-law, Russell DeSimone.
Once the restoration of the Eddy house is completed, the owners plan to build four townhouses at the back of the 2.5-acre property.
