NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - The annual Polar Plunge in Newport that was canceled on New Year’s Day due to frigid temperatures will take place next month.

The Newport Daily News reports that the event will happen Sunday Feb. 25 at noon at Easton’s Beach.

Wind chills below zero prompted organizers and city officials to postpone the New Year’s Day event. Brutally cold temperatures on the East Coast forced organizers in other communities to cancel similar events.

Funds raised for the Polar Plunge in Newport support a Wish Come True, a group that grants wishes for children with life-threatening diseases.

Kathy Connolly, fundraising coordinator for the nonprofit, says this year’s event will help send a 12-year-old girl to Disney World this spring.
