NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Icy conditions forced officials to briefly close two bridges spanning the Narragansett Bay.

The Providence Journal reports that officials closed the Jamestown and Pell Bridges for a little less than an hour on Saturday due to an overnight freeze that created dangerous driving conditions.

Newport Police Lt. John Carlone says the department received reports of cars sliding and minor collisions early Saturday morning. The closure of the bridges allowed transportation crews to salt and sand the spans.

The Pell Bridge between Newport and Jamestown and the Jamestown Bridge to the west closed around 7 a.m. and were reopened about an hour later.
