SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP) - Pacific Gas & Electric says a small fire at the Diablo Canyon nuclear power station did not affect plant safety.

The Tribune of San Luis Obispo reports the fire occurred Thursday evening at the Central Coast plant.

According to PG&E spokesman John Lindsey, the fire was the result of overheating of a motorized pump that is used to clean kelp and ocean debris.

Lindsay said the on-site fire department responded but also summoned Cal Fire out of an abundance of caution. That request was then quickly canceled because the fire was already out.

Both nuclear reactors continued to operate at full power.
