BALTIMORE (AP) - A Baltimore high school student has been arrested for bringing a loaded handgun to school, in the second such incident within a week.
City schools spokeswoman Edie House-Foster says an Excel Academy staff member discovered the student had a gun as they were entering the building Wednesday. School police took the unidentified student into custody.
Wednesday’s arrest marked the third time this school year that a loaded gun has been confiscated from a Baltimore student, and follows Tuesday’s deadly school shooting in Kentucky. Last Thursday, a loaded gun was recovered at Carver Vocational-Technical High School.
The president of the city school police union, Sgt. Clyde Boatwright, tells The Baltimore Sun it’s time to “get serious” about gun possession among students, touching on a contentious debate over arming Baltimore school police.
