WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A lawmaker wants to make Delaware’s official state song more inclusive by adding “gender-neutral language.”
The News Journal in Wilmington reported Wednesday that the words to “Our Delaware” are suddenly at the heart of a mini-controversy.
Democratic state Rep. Gerald Brady introduced a bill that would alter two phrases. It would change “loyal son” to “loyal one.” It would also remove the word “his” from the line “Where the toiler seeks his pillow.” The phrase would instead end with “a pillow.”
Brady said the proposed modifications are in response to changing social mores. But opponents see the bill as political correctness gone too far. Republican state Sen. Colin Bonini asked rhetorically if rock songs and blues songs about women should be changed.
