CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - A new multidisciplinary art exhibit at the University of Illinois explores themes of colonialism and discovery through the eyes of an African who travels through London.

It’s called “Through the Black Country” and opens Thursday at the Krannert Art Museum in Champaign.

Artist Allan deSouza uses fictional diary entries, photographs, collages and reconfigured maps. The exhibit examines London’s racial history with the character seeing areas where immigrants and refugees have been settled or displaced.

The exhibition’s curator, Allyson Purpura, says the artist likes to play “on the border between fiction and nonfiction, what is real and what is imagined.”

The artist grew up in London and was born in Kenya to South Asian parents.

The artist will be at the museum on March 1 for a talk.
