Sen. Tammy Duckworth is not worried about being pregnant or giving birth while serving in the Senate, she said in an NBC News interview that aired Wednesday.
“This was a struggle to get pregnant. It is a struggle to be a working mom and to try to deal with all of these issues,” Ms. Duckworth, Illinois Democrat, said.
Ms. Duckworth will be the first U.S. senator to give birth while in office. She is an Iraq War veteran who lost both legs in combat and explained that her disability made it harder to get pregnant.
Ms. Duckworth said she doesn’t see being a new mom in the Senate any differently then if she were working any other job.
“Women have been getting pregnant and continuing to work to support their families for years and so to me it’s seems very ordinary,” she explained.
This will be Ms. Duckworth’s second child. She is due sometime in the spring.
