UNION TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Two Michigan state police officers have been wounded while executing a search warrant in a cold case investigation.
Detective Sgt. Aaron Steensma and Trooper Daniel Thayer were shot about 11:15 a.m. Wednesday in Union Township, south of Battle Creek.
Police say they were trying to take cover outside a home after the suspect pointed a long gun at them. Steensma was struck in the chest and was in serious condition at a hospital. Thayer suffered a grazing would to his hand. Thayer’s ballistic vest stopped a slug that struck his chest area.
State police earlier had said the suspect was believed to be on the property in southern Michigan after the shooting, but later said that person was deceased.
No further details were released.
