SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - High school student journalists in Utah have created an alternate school newspaper after district officials removed a story from their website.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports the Herrmian High students had posted a story about a teacher’s firing over alleged misconduct, but were surprised to see it taken down. In response, the students created a website on Monday called the Herriman Telegram, a variant of the school’s Herriman Telegraph.
The students say that district officials censored their work by removing the story. They have launched an online petition asking that student editors of the school’s official newspaper be allowed to publish and edit their own content.
Jordan School District spokeswoman Sandra Riesgraf says the story had been removed to ensure that the students’ journalistic work is accurate, appropriate and informative.
