Former actress and self-help author Suzanne Somers said she’s “happy” with President Trump’s first year in office, acknowledging that she may catch some flak in Hollywood for saying so.
“I’m happy about him,” the “Step by Step” star told TMZ as she was leaving Madeo Restaurant in Los Angeles over the weekend.
“I’m happy that the economy’s doing so much better,” Ms. Somers added.
She admitted that support for the president is “very rare” in Hollywood.
“And now my career is over!” she said, laughing.
Ms. Somers, 71, has been relatively outspoken about her conservative views, though she considers herself an independent.
In 2014, she wrote a column published by The Washington Times, saying the country had become more divided than ever under then-President Barack Obama.
“Sadly, in the past few years, our great country has become a divided nation,” she wrote. “Black is divided from white. Gay is divided from straight. Rich is divided from poor. Religious is divided from secular. We are not talking to each other. We do not respect our differences. We have become societal isolationists.
“Where are the Ronald Reagans and the Tip O’Neills of today?” she asked. “We are in desperate need of leaders who will bring us together and talk to each other, so we can all begin to talk to each other once again.”
A few months later, Ms. Somers told Fox Business that the Obama administration was “the most divisive of all the administrations” she’d ever experienced in her life.
“And it’s become divisive in the industry that if you are not part of the group, you probably should keep your thoughts to yourself,” she said on Oct. 15, 2014.
