HAMPTON, N.H. (AP) - Officials in a New Hampshire town are accusing Gov. Chris Sununu of organizing a “hit job” against supporters of a potential lawsuit over state-owned Hampton Beach.
The Portsmouth Herald reports multiple Hampton selectmen said during Monday’s board meeting the Republican governor coordinated the Jan. 16 meeting with residents who opposed the lawsuit.
They also criticized Sununu for holding the meeting on short notice.
The town is threatening to sue over responsibilities for the state beach, including emergency calls. Officials have set Jan. 31 as a deadline to file the lawsuit.
Sununu took exception to the notion that the meeting flew under the radar. A spokesman said the meeting was on the town’s official calendar, the governor publicized the event on his webpage, and New Hampshire State Parks tweeted about it.
