Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney said Monday that President Trump’s plan for DACA recipients depends on what other border security measures are put in place.
“If you simply gave amnesty, whatever you want to call it, to the folks who are here, but don’t solve border security, then you’re simply delaying another DACA 10 or 15 years from now. You have to deal with this holistically,” Mr. Mulvaney said on CNN.
When asked what type of protections Mr. Trump is considering, the budget director said it “depends on what we get in exchange.”
He emphasized that the goal of the administration is not just to address DACA — Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals — but also to prevent similar problems in the future. He said Mr. Trump’s decision to end the program was meant to “shine a light” on this problem and force Congress to address it.
Mr. Trump decided to end the program last September, giving lawmakers six months to address the issue. The deadline to put a new program in place is March 5.
