In a heated discussion about immigration on ABC’s “The View,” Meghan McCain questioned Republican strategist and prominent Trump critic Ana Navarro why she still associates herself with a party so antithetical to her views.

“I understand that DACA is a very emotional issue at this point, but most Republicans are on my side on this one, Ana,” Ms. McCain said on Monday’s show. “And I just don’t—it’s really difficult for me to understand sometimes why you still consider yourself a Republican.”

“Because I’m a Hispanic, immigrant Latina,” Ms. Navarro shot back, drawing cheers from the studio audience.

“I understand that—” Ms. McCain tried to interject.

“Because I was brought to this country when I was eight years old,” Ms. Navarro continued. “Because my parents fled communism, and it was not my decision to come here. I came here through no decision of my own.”

When the conversation turned to the government shutdown, Ms. Navarro criticized Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Republican, for using the troops as a political football.

“But I would say to, you know, to Mitch McConnell, I would say to everybody, because it’s going to happen on both sides, do not play with the people that are defending our national security that are putting their lives at risk to keep the rest of us safe,” Ms. Navarro said.

Ms. McCain said it’s “intellectually dishonest” to blame Republicans for both the 2013 and 2018 shutdowns.

“To sit here and say this government shutdown has anything to do with my or the Republican Party’s love for the troops is just intellectually dishonest,” Ms. McCain said.
