SCARBOROUGH, Maine (AP) - Police in Maine have identified a suspect in Texas who they say reported two fake crimes in a practice known as swatting.

The Portland Press Herald reports Scarborough police announced Monday they had identified a suspect in Texas. Police say the suspect called about a hostage situation at a hotel at 1:40 a.m. on Jan. 16 and a sexual assault in a Walmart parking lot an hour later. Police determined both calls were false.

Investigators say they determined both calls were made by the same person. Police say they coordinated with the FBI during the investigation.

Police have not released the suspect’s name or any information about possible charges.

The case follows the death of a Kansas man who was shot by police during a hoax emergency call.
