PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Tax experts say some fines levied against Maine businesses by the IRS under President Obama’s Affordable Care Act were due to mistakes and shouldn’t be paid.
The Portland Press Herald reports the IRS has ordered multiple businesses in Maine to pay fines for breaching the health care law’s employer mandate. Under the current provision, employers must offer insurance coverage to at least 95 percent of employees.
Bill Enck, of Berry Dunn McNeil & Parker LLC, says most assessments his accounting firm has reviewed involved some type of error. Enck says businesses either incorrectly reported information to the IRS or had their submissions incorrectly processed by the agency.
According to Berry Dunn, the fines have reached upward of $1 million. Enck say businesses should dispute the fines.
