PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence has launched a new program to help entrepreneurs start their own businesses.
Democratic Mayor Jorge Elorza says that up to 100 unemployed and under-employed residents will receive entrepreneurship training and support to start their businesses.
The Center for Women and Enterprise will administer the self-employment program.
Participants will take courses in business plan development to gain financial literacy and practical business skills, and work with mentors to prepare for launching their business.
The city made $100,000 in community development block grant funding available for the program.

The city is also hosting a community meeting to talk about efforts to encourage small business growth. It will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the municipal building at 444 Westminster Street.
