Along with helping defeat Oklahoma 54-48 in the Rose Bowl to put Georgia in the national championship game, Bulldogs running back tandem Sony Michel and Nick Chubb broke the FBS record for career rushing yards by a pair of teammates.
After combining for 326 yards and five rushing touchdowns on 25 carries in Monday’s thrilling win over the Sooners, Michel and Chubb now have rushed for a total of 8,284 yards in their Georgia careers.
That mark surpasses the previous record held by famed SMU duo Eric Dickerson and Craig James. Nicknamed “The Pony Express,” Dickerson and James rushed for a combined 8,193 yards from 1979-82. Dickerson went on to set the NFL record for rushing yards in a season with 2,105, an achievement which still stands today.
The FBS rushing record behind them, Michel and Chubb will now turn their attention to winning their first national championship — Georgia is set to face fellow SEC juggernaut Alabama in the final on Monday, Jan. 8.
