PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza says he is running for a second term.
The Democrat tells the Providence Journal he would like to build on the foundation of his first term to accomplish more. Elorza says his administration has focused on city finances, infrastructure, schools and long-term planning.
Elorza says Providence ended the fiscal year with a $7.2 million surplus that was used to pay a $4.9 million settlement to the city’s firefighters. The mayor says some accounts of the city’s finances have been misleading.
Elorza believes leasing the Providence Water Supply Board could quell long-term financial problems. The city has about $1 billion in owed retiree liabilities. Elorza says the board, which is valued at $404.2 million, could be leased or sold to help with the pension fund.
