FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) - Officials say gaming officers are on the lookout for cougars in northwestern New Mexico who are suspected of recently killing a number of goats in the area.

The Daily Times of Farmington, New Mexico, reports New Mexico Department of Game and Fish spokesman Dan Williams says the mountain lions are going after goats in San Juan County.

Williams says the first report came about two weeks ago when a female cougar with cubs killed two goats.

Amy Harden, whose goats were killed Thursday night in the La Plata area, says one of her goats died of fright during the attack while another was killed and partially eaten.

Cougars primarily prey on deer.
