STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi man is charged with capital murder and aggravated assault after an optometrist was shot to death in a busy shopping area.

News outlets report that 41-year-old Tommy Chisholm of Kosciusko is charged in the slaying of 42-year-old Shauna Witt inside a Walmart in Starkville, where she had an optometry practice. Starkville police arrested Chisholm in the store parking lot shortly after the Jan. 13 shooting, and Witt died at a local hospital.

Investigators said Chisholm and Witt had been in an on-again, off-again dating relationship.

The Commercial Dispatch reports that the aggravated assault charge was filed because a bullet from Chisholm’s gun passed through a bystander’s jacket.

The Starkville Daily News reports that Chisholm’s attorney, Mark Williamson, declined to comment on his client’s behalf.
