A NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll out Friday shows President Trump with a 39 percent approval rating, the lowest of any modern president in the poll’s history.

This compares to 57 percent who disapprove of the president’s job, and 51 percent who “strongly” disapprove. His approval rating stood at 41 percent in last month’s poll.

Among Republicans, Mr. Trump remains strong at 78 percent, but even among his core base — whites and males — less than half approve of his job performance. He has a 45 percent approval among whites and 46 percent among men.

“At the time of his inauguration, ’hopeful’ was the word most used word about the 2016 results,” Peter Hart, the Democratic pollster who with Republican pollster Bill McInturff, told NBC News. “But at the end of his first year, ’disgust’ was the word most cited about him.”

Americans polled cited the economy and low unemployment rate as one accomplishment that made them feel the best about Mr. Trump, with 20 percent saying it made them more positive about his performance. Another 13 percent said his “America first” policy made them feel more positive.

The poll was conducted among 900 adults via telephone with a plus or minus margin of 3.3 percent.
