SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The University of Utah soon will have a new president.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports the Utah Board of Regents is expected to vote Thursday night on its selection of the next president of the University of Utah.

A search committee announced three finalists last week - University of Utah Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Ruth Watkins, Pennsylvania State University Executive Vice President Nicholas Jones and University of Virginia Executive Vice President Thomas Katsouleas.

Watkins would be the first female president in the university’s history if selected.

The three candidates are vying to replace University of Utah President David Pershing when he retires. Pershing, a longtime University of Utah employee and president since 2012, announced in May he would step down after a successor was selected.
