PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A former top official with a Rhode Island construction workers labor union has pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $300,000 in union funds.
Federal prosecutors say 42-year-old Richard D’Antuono, of Cranston, pleaded guilty Thursday to embezzlement from a labor organization, embezzlement from an employee benefit plan, and identity theft.
D’Antuono is the former business manager and financial secretary for the Operative Plasterers and Cement Masons International Association Local 40.
Authorities say he embezzled almost $320,000 from a union operational account and from a fund used to finance training programs for apprentices and for the training of journeymen members.
Prosecutors say he stole the money by making out checks out to himself in excess of his salary and stipend, and by forging signatures.
Sentencing is scheduled for April 6.
