2 struck, killed by trains in western Washington

SEATTLE (AP) - Officials say two people were killed on BNSF Railway train tracks in western Washington.

KOMO-TV reports that a northbound train from Seattle fatally struck a 60-year-old man at around 6 a.m. Tuesday.

BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas says the incident happened in downtown Seattle when the man “waved his arms and then buckled down” in front of the train.

Melonas says the freight train crew sounded the horn and applied the emergency brake in an unsuccessful attempt to stop.

The second fatality happened north of Seattle at about 6 a.m. Tuesday when a freight train leaving Everett struck a person.

Melonas says the crew applied the emergency brake but struck the person, who was then thrown into a nearby body of water.

The Monroe Police Department reported the body had been found in a logjam in Woods Creek.
