CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - Wyoming law enforcement officials would like to see stricter penalties for people who flee from police.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported Tuesday that officials from the Cheyenne Police Department and Wyoming Highway Patrol are asking state lawmakers to pass a provision that would add stricter penalties for eluding or fleeing from police.

Under current state laws, people can receive a sentence of up to six months in jail and/or a $750 fine for eluding.

In other states, a more serious version of the offense can carry felony penalties.

Wyoming Highway Patrol Administrator Col. Kebin Haller says tougher penalties could improve safety.

Opponents of the idea say enhanced penalties will serve more as a tough-on-crime statement rather than deter people from fleeing.

Others say it could lead to higher rates of incarceration.
