ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - The 5th annual North American Conference on Video Game Music is taking place this weekend at the University of Michigan.

The conference runs Saturday and Sunday at the Ann Arbor school. It brings together professionals and scholars in fields including musicology, music theory, ethnomusicology, media studies, sound studies and composition to discuss music in video games.

Matthew Thompson, assistant professor at the university’s School of Music Theatre & Dance, is a presenter and the lead organizer of the conference. He’s a classically trained pianist who teaches a popular course on video game music at the University of Michigan.

Thompson notes that video game music has evolved over the years from the use of simpler sounds to “highly interactive, complex musical scores.”
