Statistically, Kirk Cousins had another productive year under center for the Redskins, topping 4,000 passing yards for the third consecutive season, the first Redskin to accomplish the feat and only the 11th quarterback in NFL history to do so.
The former Michigan State Spartan recorded the seventh-most passing yards in the league this season with 4,093, two yards behind the Falcons’ Matt Ryan at No. 6. His 27 touchdown passes were the NFL’s eighth-best tally, Cousins also cracked the Top 10 in completions, completion percentage, and passing yards per game (not to mention interceptions).
Cousins will be in the conversation to make his second straight Pro Bowl, depending on how many of the three previously selected NFC quarterbacks drop out by the time Jan. 28 rolls around.
There is already one spot open, with the Eagles’ Carson Wentz done for the season with a torn ACL.
Russell Wilson of the Seahawks is almost a lock to play with Seattle out of the playoff picture, but New Orleans’ Drew Brees could also miss out if the Saints make a deep playoff run.
Cousins is certainly not a shoe-in to take Wentz’s place, the likes of the Rams’ Jared Goff, Detroit’s Matthew Stafford, and even the Vikings’ Case Keenum all posted similarly impressive stat sheets.
Still, for all the drama surrounding his contract, by the numbers Cousins had a strong campaign as Washington’s quarterback, arguably one of the 10 best among NFL signal-callers this season.
