BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Transportation planners are beginning to consider replacing or significantly upgrading the bridge that links Vermont’s largest city and the neighboring community of Winooski.
The existing, 90-year-old bridge over the Winooski River links Burlington’s Colchester Avenue with Main Street in the city of Winooski.
The bridge, which carries thousands of cars a day between the two communities, is sound for now. But when work is needed, planners know it will create a major disruption for the people who use it.
The Burlington Free Press reports that long-range forecasts of traffic detours or slow-downs could last from weeks to months.
There is no cost estimate or time frame yet for work on the bridge. All versions of the new or rehabilitated bridge include more room for pedestrians and cyclists.
