BOSTON (AP) - Gov. Charlie Baker says the historic Longfellow Bridge that spans the Charles River between Boston and Cambridge will fully reopen in May.
The Boston Globe reports that Baker drew loud applause from business leaders when he made the announcement Thursday before the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce.
The 110-year-old bridge named for the famed 19th century poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow has been undergoing renovations since 2013, during which it has alternately closed to incoming or outgoing traffic.
The $300 million overhaul was expected to take three years but dragged on for five in part because of the need to preserve the span’s historic character.
Pedestrians, bicyclists and MBTA Red Line vehicles also use the bridge.
Baker says reopening it fully will be a “huge win” for all of Massachusetts.
