GAITHERSBURG, Md. (AP) - A former Uber driver has been convicted of attempting to kill a Maryland police officer with a homemade miniature shotgun.
The Washington Post reports that Jonathan Hemming, of Gaithersburg, was convicted Wednesday of trying to kill Montgomery County Police Detective Donnie Oaks in May 2016. Hemming was also convicted of first-degree assault of another officer, resisting arrest and several firearms charges. He faces a possible life sentence.
Police said Hemming pulled a homemade gun out and pointed it at them when they tried to arrest him on drug-related charges.
Hemming testified that when police approached his car in a parking lot, he moved one of two homemade guns to look for insurance papers, but did not point either gun at the officers.
