PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Abortion rights advocates in Rhode Island spoke at the State House this week to press for protections in state law.

The Providence Journal reports the coalition called for the state legislature to approve two matching bills in the House and Senate that would prohibit the state from restricting abortions. Advocates also want to repeal three state laws that were nullified by the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Roe v. Wade.

Steven Brown, executive director of the Rhode Island Chapter of the ACLU, said the laws limiting abortion in the state are unenforceable but warned of potential changes at the federal level.

House Majority leader Joseph Shekarchi says he doesn’t see any imminent threat to overturn abortion rights in Rhode Island. Legislators have promised a hearing on the issue.
