COVENTRY, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island businessman has cancelled a deal for a proposed outdoor gun range near an elementary school.

The Kent County Daily Times reports Thomas Miozzi withdrew an application last week with Coventry officials for the gun range. Gun store owner John Psilopoulos had proposed building the range a little more than a mile (1.61 kilometer) away from Washington Oak Elementary School.

The school committee had opposed the project, citing concerns about public safety and noise that would be created. Psilopoulos had said the range would follow safety practices and that noise would be well below legal limits.

State Sen. Leonidas Raptakis says it’s unfortunate the project even got this far. Raptakis says residents should “remain vigilant and engaged” when new projects are proposed.
