NEW YORK (AP) - A judge says New York City lawyers have reached a settlement with the family of an 11-year-old girl who survived a random stabbing inside the elevator of a public housing complex more than three years ago.
The family of Mikayla Capers filed a civil suit against the New York City Housing Authority in December 2014, six months after she and her friend, 6-year-old Joshua Avitto, were attacked.
The family argued housing officials neglected the Brooklyn complex and didn’t fix a front door that accused murderer Daniel St. Hubert used to enter the building.
The settlement amount wasn’t disclosed. Capers had testified on Tuesday.
St. Hubert has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to go on trial in March.
Avitto’s mother has also sued the housing authority. That case is ongoing.
